So, as the kids today would say, I began working the Web back in the late nineteen hundreds.
When I started, there were no classes to take.
I started teaching myself HTML during four days of spring rains which kept me indoors and away from my outdoor painting job.
I quickly became very excited by the unlimited possibilites of the Web. While working in the home improvement field I saw an amazing potential for an online contractor referral service and informative Web pages to complement and surpass the capabilities of newspaper, magazine, and telephone book ads.
My first major challenge came during a local business expo. I approached a local business owner with the idea of a Web site for his business. I was shaken by his immediate dismissal. He wanted nothing to do with a "world wide" anything, as his business was NOT global. It was only after I got home that I thought of the argument I should have been prepared for. I should have asked if he had a phone. Then I would have reminded him that anyone in the world, could, theoreticlaly, communicate with him by phone. Next I should have asked if he ever sent or receivd mail. Again, I could have discussed the global implications. Had I been prepared, I easily could have pointed our that he was, in fact, already using two "world wide" services and that it was simply a matter of how these services were utilized.
Today, who doesn't have a Web site for their business? Oh and, by the way... Angies List, right? I missed out on that one.
So I kept reading, learning, and experimenting. Within three years I was working in the area of non-profit healthcare, furthring the depth and breadth of my Web skills, knowledge, and capabilities. I am always learning. Being able to apply and contribute continualy brings me joy and satisfaction.
